Rinku Singh Facts

  1. He excelled in javelin throwing as a youngster and was a junior national javelin medalist.
  2. After winning the reality TV show The Million Dollar Arm in 2008, he and runner-up Dinesh Patel traveled to Los Angeles where they trained with University of Southern California pitching coach Tom House.
  3. They tried out in front of scouts from 20 Major League Baseball (MLB) teams in November 2008 and they both were signed to contracts with the Pittsburgh Pirates organization, an American professional baseball franchise based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. This made the pair the first Indians to sign American major league baseball contracts.
  4. The duo began the 2009 baseball season with the Gulf Coast League Pirates, the Pittsburgh Pirates‘ affiliate in the Gulf Coast League, a rookie-level Minor League Baseball organization that operates in Florida. In July 2009, Rinku became the first Indian citizen to appear in a professional baseball game in the United States.
  5. He finished the season with a 1–2 record and a 5.84 ERA (Earned Run Average) in 11 games, allowing just 1 run on 3 hits in his final 6 appearances. He went 2–0 with a 2.61 ERA over 13 games in 2010 and by August that year, he was promoted to the PiratesClass A Short-Season affiliate, the State College Spikes.
  6. Rinku also turned out for the Canberra Cavalry in the Australian Baseball League (ABL) for the competition’s inaugural 2010–11 season. He went 1–0 with a 3.94 ERA in 16 innings pitched.
  7. He opened the 2011 season in the Dominican Summer League (DSL), a branch affiliated with Minor League Baseball which is played in the Dominican Republic. Rinku pitched in 8 games spread over the DSL, the Gulf Coast League, and the New York–Penn League (a Minor League Baseball organization that operated in the northeastern United States from 1939 to 2020), before joining West Virginia Power of the South Atlantic League (a Minor League Baseball organization with teams predominantly in states along the Atlantic coast of the United States from New York to Georgia) in July 2011.
  8. Rinku returned to the Australian Baseball League for the 2011–12 season, turning out for the Adelaide Bite. He even made it to the World All-Star team for the 2011 Australian Baseball League ‘All-Star Game’.
  9. In 2012, he pitched in 39 games for the West Virginia Power, throwing 72 innings, earning a 3–1 win-loss record, and striking out 65 batters. A promising start to his baseball career was scuppered by injuries and surgery that forced him to miss out on the entire season in both 2013 and 2014. He also missed all of the 2015 season due to a broken elbow.
  10. The Pirates organization had re-signed him in November 2015 and he made a solitary appearance for the Gulf Coast League Pirates in 2016, pitching 1 scoreless inning.
  11. Thereafter, with his baseball career seemingly going nowhere, he shifted his focus to wrestling. He signed a contract with WWE in January 2018 and made his in-ring debut in May 2018 with the promotion’s NXT brand.
  12. In 2021, he was promoted to the WWE‘s RAW brand, and by November 2021, he had transitioned from a tag team wrestler fighting under the ring name ‘Rinku’ to a singles wrestler under the ring name ‘Veer’ which was later tweaked to ‘Veer Mahaan’.
